Amanda's Success Story
What brought you to Med*Thin?
I was referred to Dr. Liao/Med*Thin by my OB/GYN. I was completely exhausted with “traditional” weight loss methods and popular programs, having tried them all (many more than once). My weight was not quite an all-time high, but close. At my annual well-women’s exam, I asked if there was any medication she could prescribe me to help with my weight. Thankfully, she made the referral and told me to read The Obesity Code, and my life was set on a happier, healthier path just a few weeks later!
Did your goals change at all once you met with Dr Liao?
My specific goal weight did not change that much, per se, but my approach and mindset absolutely changed after speaking with Dr. Liao. At first, I thought I would just get on medication to kick start my weight loss, and then I would go back to calorie counting like I had done 20x before. In all honesty, I thought I could drop 15-20 pounds quickly and then, more likely than not, fall off the wagon and gain it back. I was a yo-yo dieter, after all.
Instead, for the first time since my first “diet” in 2005, I met someone that made me feel like I could actually change. I could actually lose the weight. I could actually be healthier. She gave me confidence, and that has been more valuable to me and my journey than words can describe. Dr. Liao gave me options and encouraged me to try things I never knew were even “allowed” in healthy weight loss, i.e. fasting! My approach quickly shifted from a meal replacement program to a moderately aggressive fasting regimen. The weight started falling off, and I had more energy than ever before. The back-of-my-mind quick 20 lb. goal quickly went away – I knew I could get to my real goal with Dr. Liao and Annie. And I did!
What was the hardest part about the journey?
Pretending like I want to exercise. Despite knowing intellectually how valuable exercise is for weight loss, overall health, energy, etc. etc. etc., it will never be my favorite thing, but I try every day. I try to find opportunities to move and stretch, or even just to get outside in the sunlight. I will keep trying, but it is my weakness and continues to be my biggest struggle.
What were your biggest victories?
The scale, of course, is a huge victory. I’ve lost 60 pounds and 20 inches in eight months, working with Dr. Liao and Annie. More than the number on the scale, though, is what it represents for my day-to-day life. I can shop wherever I want again. I feel comfortable on airplanes. My skin is clear. My headaches are gone. I sleep better and have more energy. I’m not bloated and hangry all day every day. Getting my confidence back is my biggest victory, and I am so grateful for it.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about starting this journey?
I would tell them to not let their past dictate their mindset. It does not matter how many times you’ve fallen down before, if you trust in yourself and in the process, you will get where you want to go. Dr. Liao and Annie are the most supportive, while still holding you accountable, people I’ve ever met. This was the best thing I’ve done for myself and for my family – it’s worth it!
